POEM OF THE MONTH: SHEFFIELD IN SEPIA
- 06/01/2025
Poem of the Month: January 2025
Chris Towers reflects this month on ‘the club’ on camera.
Sheffield Football Club has such a long history, and it means there are many photos of the club and players, across the years. Times and technology has changed how we see these images , and this poem reflects that, from sepia or black and white to colour. From the old cameras to the smart phone, but nevertheless, the need to remember lives on.
Sheffield in Sepia
One day I saw the club in sepia,
saw them in grainy monochrome,
from camera obscura,
when the East Bank washome.
I saw them in a photo rack,
breathing air in a winter cold,
imagined jerseys , red and black,
those Sheffield men of old.
One day I’ll be in a photo rack,
seen breathing air in a winter cold,
you’ll see squares, red and black,
in Sheffield colours of old.
I saw the club in sepia, from
when the East Bank was home.
