MATCH REPORT: RETFORD UNITED VS SHEFIELD FC PRE-SEASON
- 20/07/2023
A second-half Luke Aldrich brace saw Sheffield FC over the line on Tuesday evening, as they ran out 2-0 winners at Cannon Park, beating a very competitive Retford United team.
Club should have taken the lead in the opening stages, after Luke Mangham’s effort struck the bar, with youngster Riley Noble unable to steer the ball over the line.
Retford were lively in the first half, however never really tested the visitors’ goal, with Josh Scully going closest with a shot on target that was easily gathered by Edd Hall.
Early in the second half it looked like the Badgers had taken the lead, again Scully was the architect with a free-kick that was parried out by Hall, however the referee blew for an infringement in the area just as the ball reached the net.
Sheffield took the lead on 52 minutes, Luke Aldrich beating a very shaky offside trap to find himself in acres of space, before coolly rounding Tom Crosby and tapping into the empty net.
It should have been two moments later, as Nathan Modest was the one to exploit the frailties in Retford’s offside trap, however with just the keeper to beat he chose to square to Luke Aldrich who was unable to reach the ball.
That second came on 71 minutes, with Modest driving through the middle and riding some tasty challenges, playing the ball to triallist Callum Brooks who laid it on a plate for Aldrich to convert.
Club’s pre-season campaign takes a mini-break now, with next Tuesday’s game at Armthorpe Welfare cancelled, the next game is a visit to Home of Football from Matlock Town on 29th July.
