Sheffield FC Women v Basford United Ladies Report
- 31/03/2025

Stacey Buxton hit an incredible strike from range as Sheffield FC Women recorded a seventh successive win with a 2-0 victory over Basford United Ladies at The Home of Football Stadium.
The striker clinched the points with two minutes to go when she found space to lash home a sensational hit into the top corner from 25 yards out.
That capped a dominant performance by Club which started courtesy of Lucy Cook tapping home from close-range via another fierce Buxton effort in the 15th minute.
Sheffield’s pressure was too much for the visitors throughout as a comfortable afternoon ensured top spot for another week and a ninth win from their last 10 games in all competitions.
An awaited Mother’s Day fixture saw Club start with intent despite Leah Kellogg producing the game’s first save via Katie Platts low shot inside two minutes.
The hosts soon crafted an opening at the other end when Brooke Smith’s lofted pass found Buxton, whose clever lobbed effort hit the crossbar on 11 minutes.
Club then had the lead moments later as Cook arrived to tap home for 1-0, reacting first to another Buxton effort against the woodwork.
More attacking play from the hosts saw Moriah McIntosh pick out Halima Essa, who poked an effort narrowly wide of goal on 20 minutes.
Buxton then hit a powerful volley past the post through Caitlyn Douglas’ cross being parried into her path just before the half-hour mark.
The pressure continued as Nicole Kemp’s free-kick delivery clipped the upright on 36 minutes, coming prior to McIntosh glancing a pinpoint Cook cross inches wide in first-half stoppage-time.
It was more of the same after the break with Buxton firing a low shot just off-target, following some neat play between Essa and Charlotte Griffin on 49 minutes. Sheffield’s top scorer continued to lead the push for a second as two driven strikes in quick succession then tested the palms of visiting keeper Paige Johnson.
Another opportunity arose shortly after the hour through another Kemp set-piece delivery, with Katie McLoughlin heading just wide.
Essa then swept over Buxton’s pullback by a whisker before the forward was denied at close-range by the onrushing Johnson on 78 minutes.
Club had Basford completely penned in and went close again with seven to play as McLoughlin’s first-time volley from Amy Nelson’s lay-off deflected wide.
Graham Abercrombie’s side eventually wrapped up victory though, when an unmarked Buxton took aim from distance with a powerful hit into the top corner for 2-0 on 88 minutes.
That ensured a comfortable closing period in which Club eased to a sixth win from six home games as attention now turns to Worksop away.
