Match Report - Worksop Town vs Sheffield FC - Tuesday 25th January 2022 (6-0)

  • 25/01/2022

It was an evening to forget for Sheffield FC on Tuesday night, as an injury hit side racked up two red cards and a 6-0 defeat, with local rivals Worksop Town making the most of an off-night for the World's First.

Things couldn't have started any worse for the visitors, with the patched up side suffering an injury in the warm up, as make-shift centre-half Scott Ruthven had to withdraw from the game.

Worksop caught Club cold with just two minutes gone, centre half Daniel Burns headed a corner goalwards, with the ball deflecting into the net.

Sheffield started to get back into the game, and had a goal ruled out five minutes later, as Ben Harriott's volley was blocked by Seb Malkowski, with Marc Newsham's rebound finish judged offside.

The hosts made it 2-0 just before the break, with Steve McDonnell's header into the box causing a scramble, giving Vaughan Redford an easy stabbed finish.

Sheffield started the second half really well and had a couple of early efforts that went close, but all that positivity was washed away following Harry Mitchell's late challenge on Cody Cromack, with the referee showing a red card.

Being reduced to ten men didn't have a massive effect on Club, but when referee Kevin Saunby decided that Ryan Musselwhite had handled outside of his area, the game was killed as a contest.

Youngster Niall Edge stepped up to the plate as replacement keeper, his first task was to pick the ball out of the net, following Lewis Buttroid's perfectly curled free-kick into the top corner.

Seconds later, and with Sheffield still reeling, Steve McDonnell made it 4-0 with a thunderbolt of a shot from 20 yards.

Worksop got their fifth ten minutes from time, Aaron Sennett-Neilson broke into the area on the left, with his cross hitting Ben Turner who was unable to prevent the ball going into his own goal.

The scoring was wrapped up just before full time, Manasse Kianga's cross was not held by Edge, giving substitute Ben Tomlinson the easy task of slamming home from three yards out.
