MATCH REPORT: SOUTH ELMSALL SERVICES VS SHEFFIELD FC (COUNTY CUP)

  • 21/10/2024

Sheffield FC progressed to the Third Round of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup, as they coasted to a morale boosting win over South Elmsall United Services, beating the County Senior League outfit 4-1 at Westfield Lane.

The Soldiers had almost had a dream start in the first few minutes, hitting Club on the counter attack as skipper Lucas Stubbs saw an opportunity to shoot from 45 yards out with Edd Hall straying off his line, with the keeper scrambling back to claw the ball off his line.

Sheffield's injury woes reared their ugly head once again on 10 minutes, as they were forced into an early change, with Harry Mitchell leaving the field with a shoulder injury.

As expected Sheffield put on the pressure, but the closest they came was from a Jack Dolman effort that scraped wide, following a great through ball from AJ Greaves.

The home side's resistance finally broke on the stroke of half time, some nifty play on the right from Jack Watson picked out Jamie Tomlinson, who calmly poked the ball under keeper Josh Heppinstall.

Sheffield doubled their lead just before the hour mark, as Rory Coleman turned provider with a corner moments after coming off the bench, Brad Beatson powering a downward header to make it 2-0.

It looked as though it was petering out as a contest, until South Elmsall grabbed a goal back on 85 minutes, big Joe Tomlinson coming forward to head home a Tom Davies corner.

Any chance of a panicked end to the game were thwarted seconds after the restart, a run by Carter Tingle was blocked with the rebound falling to Connor Cutts, who drilled the ball low and hard into the bottom corner from 30 yards beyond the keeper's reach.

Club made it 4-1 in the last minute of the game, another corner from Rory Coleman was dispatched by Luke Aldrich, and it was nearly five in the dying seconds as Coleman struck the bar from distance.
