MATCH REPORT: DUNSTON UTS VS SHEFFIELD FC

There was late drama at Craik Park on Tuesday evening, as a late strike from promotion chasing Dunston snatched a point against an impressive Sheffield FC, summing up an end-to-end 3-3 draw in Morpeth.

Club started the brightest of the two teams, and had several chances to open the scoring, however it was the hosts’ Jack Maskall who had that honour on 31 minutes, converting a penalty after the visitors’ Reece Fielding handled the ball.

The game truly sprang to life in the second half, with Sheffield taking just four minutes after the break to restore parity, as loanee Ben Whelan rose at the back post to power home a Stephen Brogan corner.

Sheffield thought they had taken the lead moments later, as Cameron Johnson and Finn O’Boyle linked up for Johnson to slam home, only to be ruled out for a very tight offside call.

As it was Dunston took full advantage, and on 65 minutes the restored their lead, Maskell grabbing his second of the night, nodding home Phil Turnbull’s corner past a static defence.

That lead lasted just two minutes, as Club went up the other end immediately to level the scores, this time the other loanee Finn O’Boyle showing great feet before curling a beauty beyond the diving Aaron Steavens.

The game turned into a frantic end-to-end feast of attacking football which must have been a joy for the neutral viewer, with Sheffield coming the closest to adding to the score with Connor Cutts testing Steavens with a thunderous effort, whilst Rory Coleman was unlucky not to turn the ball home at the far post following some creative build up play.

The visitors finally took their deserved lead six minutes from time, AJ Greaves’ ball through was misjudged by the Dunston defence, leaving top scorer Cameron Johnson free to do what he does best – slamming the ball home with confidence to make it 3-2.

Sadly for Sheffield the win was not to be, and two minutes from time a lack of communication from the defence saw a routine header not dealt with, allowing Luke Carr to take the ball on and tuck it beyond Edd Hall to make it a breathless 3-3.
