Sheffield FC Women kicked off their 2019/20 FA Women’s National League campaign this week-end with a number of new faces both on and off the pitch.
In post since February 2019, first team manager, Calum Oakenfold has had his first pre-season in charge of the team which has afforded him the proper opportunity to not only shape his playing squad, but also to add to the coaching and performance support staff off the pitch.
Oakenfold, who successfully completed his UEFA ‘A’ Coaching Licence this summer, has added Mark Wozniak as assistant manager this season. Mark joins the World’s First with a wealth of playing and academy coaching experience, and will add another dimension to Oakenfold’s technical staff as he looks to build on a strong start to his managerial reign at the Club.
Nathan Wigfull and Victoria Bishop will continue to build on the excellent work they carried out last season in their respective roles as goalkeeper coach and physiotherapist.
Jake Roe has been added to the performance support staff in a joint role of strength and conditioning coach and sports therapist. Currently studying for a Masters degree in physiotherapy at Leeds Beckett University, Jake has previously worked in the women’s game at Aston Villa, and is a fine addition to the staff.
Last season’s first team assistant manager, Chris Hames, has taken up the role as manager of the new development team. Over the years, this team has been a hugely important part of Sheffield FC Women, so re-starting the squad on the right footing has been a vital part of rebuilding things since the Club’s exit from the WSL. Ex-first team manager, Zoe Johnson, and Calum Oakenfold both started at the Club in this role, and Hames is the ideal person and coach to take on this mantle.
Assisting Hames with the development squad will be Adam Rawlings, a recent graduate from Sheffield Hallam University, who is currently working in China with a Premier League club until the end of August.
Oakenfold reflected on the staffing structure for the new season:
“We have made some additions to our staff team this season to try and strengthen the support for the players at the Club. Our ambitions this season start with having good foundations, and that begins with the staff.
“I’ve worked with Mark previously, and he brings good experience and knowledge to the team in his role as first team assistant manager, so it’s great to have him on board.
“I am also delighted that Chris has taken the role of development team manager this season which is such an important role for us. With his previous experience, we feel Chris is ideal for this role, and will bring so much to it to create an excellent environment for our young players to learn, improve and develop.
“Jake has already made a big impact in his role, and brings professionalism and enthusiasm to his role, which is exactly what we look for in all our staff.
“The team we now have in place has a common-mindset, with its members all on the same page and pushing in the right direction. We hope this will give the players all they need to be ready to approach each and every game, and help us to try to compete at our optimal level as a squad.”
