Sheffield FC suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday evening, as local rivals Stocksbridge Park Steels came from behind twice at a rainy Bracken Moor, to eventually run out 3-2 winners.
The visitors made all the early pressing and should have capitalised on the wave of pressure, with a Michael Williams free-kick picking out Brad Beatson’s head, only to see ex-Sheffield trialist Jacob Carney palm the ball over the bar.
Club took the lead on 13 minutes, as Williams won the ball in the middle of the park and after Karl Demidh had got a controlling touch, it was Williams again hitting the ball in stride from 25 yards under the body of Carney.
Steels responded on 20 minutes with their first real foray into Sheffield territory, ex-Clubbie Ross Goodwin sent in a dangerous ball that had everyone standing, with Luke Mangham smashing the ball home from a yard out.
The rest of the half was a catalogue of missed and wasted chances for Sheffield, Mitchell Dunne should have done better with a one-on-one situation, whilst Demidh had a couple of efforts that really should have tested the young Steels keeper.
Eight minutes after the restart Club regained the lead from the spot, James Gregory firing a cross directly at the arm of Reece Fielding, and after the protests had died down up stepped Dunne to squeeze the penalty under Carney.
Again the hosts responded and within five minutes were level, a break from defence started by Scott Ruthven broke down at the edge of the area with Declan Slater being fouled, the referee however played advantage and Ruthven drilled a shot from the edge of the area that gave Dylan Parkin no chance.
Stocksbridge started to look the stronger of the two sides from this point, Slater forced a decent save from Parkin, whilst Josh Nodder went close for the hosts as well.
The last five minutes brought the drama and the decisive moment, an innocuous cross into the box struck a Sheffield arm, yet again a penalty was awarded – with Mangham sealing the game with an emphatic spot-kick into the top corner of the net.
