Sheffield FC Women fell to a 5-1 defeat at home to Derby County Women with goals from Jodie Michalska, Emily Joyce, Megan Tinsley and two from Callan Barber, with Paige Crossman netting for Sheffield.

The first 15 minutes of the game was closely contested with both sides creating chances and maintaining periods of possession.

Derby County started to put on the pressure and were unlucky not to take the lead on 22 minutes when Jade Formaston’s powerful shot to the bottom left corner was tipped past the post by Sheffield ‘keeper, Laura Parsons.

After a good spell of chances, the visitors took the lead in the 29th minute when Sophie Domingo cut in on the left, squared the ball across to Jodie Michalska who slotted past Parsons.

Shortly after, on 34 minutes, Derby doubled their lead when Emily Joyce smashed the ball past Parsons following a scramble from a corner.

It took just four minutes for Club to respond, a long free-kick into the box fell to Paige Crossman who placed the ball into the bottom right corner from close range.

It looked to be a good finish to the half for the Club, however, the visitors were awarded a penalty when Domingo was brought down inside the box on the stroke of half-time. Callan Barber took the penalty and side-footed the ball into the bottom right corner, sending Parsons the wrong way.

The Rams started the second half the stronger side and almost got a fourth, Amy Sims hit a driven ball across goal to Domingo who drove a first time shot, but Parsons managed to parry the effort onto the post at full stretch.

Shortly after, another tremendous save by Parsons denied Derby when she tipped Sims’ effort onto the bar and away from goal.

Parsons was unable to keep Derby at bay any longer when Megan Tinsley broke through on the left-hand side and volleyed the ball into the far top corner on 54 minutes.

After a good 15 minute spell for Sheffield, with Jen Pearson’s effort being cleared off the line and Crossman being inches off getting a toe on the ball at goal, the visitors bagged a fifth in the 71st minute when Barber received the ball in the box and smashed a low effort into the bottom left corner grabbing her second of the game.

Charlotte Clarke in the Derby net was called into action in the latter part of the game, brilliantly parrying away Pearson’s two volleyed efforts inside the box.
