Sheffield turned in a fine performance on Tuesday evening, as they overcame an excellent Cleethorpes Town side, ending their unbeaten record with a convincing 3-1 victory.
The home side made their almost traditional start to the game, going all out in attack and opening the scoring on 4 minutes, after Karl Demidh send in a fantastic cross which Marc Newsham clipped beyond Theo Richardson.
It became 2-0 ten minutes later, as some good work from Ash Grayson and Rob Darkin on the right saw the ball flash across goal, with Mitchell Dunne powering home with a first time strike.
A stunned Clee side tried to get back in the game, but were thwarted by a solid home defence and some wayward shooting, with an effort from Alex Flett going the nearest to testing Jonathan Hedge in the Sheffield goal.
At the other end Club went close to adding to the lead, with Mitch Dunne seeing his shot deflected over, and skipper Adam Chapman hitting a volley just wide.
After the break Cleethorpes came out all guns blazing, and Sheffield had to be at their best to absorb all the pressure, which they did and saw outlets to hit the visitors on the break.
It was from a period of respite that led to Club all but wrapping the game up on the hour, a Matt Roney corner into the middle eventually found its way to Marc Newsham, with the potent striker lashing home with his left foot.
It was at this point that Cleethorpes finally woke up, and started to dominate the game, with Flett finally forcing a great save from Hedge with a fierce shot.
On 73 minutes the Owls pulled one back, a corner in from the left from Flett hit a Sheffield head, diverting into the net for an own goal.
Sheffield had to be at their best at the back, and Oli Donald was the next to force a block from the home defence, followed by a fantastic block on the line by Brad Beatson denying Jon Oglesby a certain goal.
Fortunately Club were able to hold on, ending the visitors record, and giving optimism for the Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Rushall Olympic.
