Sheffield FC made it five wins from five games on Thursday evening, as they ran out 2-1 winners at a sweltering Home of Football, beating neighbours Chesterfield FC in an entertaining game.
The first quarter of the game saw plenty of effort and endeavour from both teams, but it took until the 18th minute for anyone to have any meaningful shot on target, as Jack McKay forced an acrobatic one-handed save from Dylan Parkin with a fierce curling effort from the left flank.
Club’s first attempt was from the unlikely source of Ashley Grayson, who hit a powerful pile-driver from thirty yards out, making Dylan Wharton in the Spireites goal dive full-stretch to turn the shot around the post.
The visitors took the lead just after the half-hour mark, as McKay tried his luck from a similar position to his earlier effort, this time giving Parkin no chance with the curl too much – the first goal the young keeper has conceded since his return to Sheffield.
That lead lasted just two minutes, as Michael Williams – making his first appearance in Club colours – showed his experience to force a defensive trip, with referee Jamie O’Connor having no doubts, and Williams tucking the ball just inside the post.
In the second half Levi Amantchi had a decent attempt on goal, his shot being tipped round the upright by Jonathan Hedge, who was making his first appearance of the season for Sheffield.
Midway through the second period the hosts took the lead, following some poor defending from a Rory Coleman corner, with Ashley Grayson taking full advantage to power home a free-header on the edge of the six-yard box.
Chesterfield plugged away for an equaliser and came very close in the last ten minutes, as first ex-Clubbie Luke Rawson’s shot struck the post, followed a few minutes later by the save of the game, as Hedge spectacularly tipped over a dipping drive from Jack Holmes.
