Sheffield FC booked a Third Round date at Swallownest on Tuesday, as they overcame a well-organised North Gawber Colliery outfit, with the hosts eventually beating the reigning champions 2-0 on a chilly autumnal night in Dronfield.
The home side contained most of the squad that had suffered a painful home defeat against bottom of the table Market Drayton on Saturday, and were favourites to be comfortable winners, however most of the action in the first half saw the away team looking the better side.
Neither side really threatened to open the scoring in the opening period, with Lee Elsworth’s corner being headed over by Carl Woodhead, and Luke Marsden seeing his header tipped over by Jonathan Hedge being the stand out moments.
Club came to life in the dying moments as James Gregory finally burst through the defence, forcing a defensive block, with Alex Wonham’s follow up well saved by Lewis Butcher.
The second half saw a much more composed and dominating display from Sheffield, and they tested the visitors early on, as first Butcher denied Marc Newsham’s shot and Gregory shot an effort just over the bar.
Sheffield eventually opened the scoring ten minutes after the restart, a superb burst down the right from Ben Turner – making his first start in six weeks following injury – saw the ball placed into the middle where Newsham glanced a header into the back corner.
Midway through the half Club were awarded a golden chance to kill the game, Mitchell Dunne was tripped in the area, however when Dunne stepped up to take the kick, his shot was poor and easily saved by Butcher.
On 73 minutes the game was made safe with a second goal, Gregory weaving through a bewildered defence, before setting up Newsham with an opportunity he gleefully took with a shot on the turn.
It could have been more emphatic for the home side as firstly Butcher denied substitute Jordan Chapell’s shot after a solo run, and Michael Williams rattled the bar from 25 yards, with Dunne picking up the rebound and heading wide.
