A last-minute goal from skipper Adam Chapman continued Sheffield FC’s month-long unbeaten run, as the World’s First came from two down to rescue a point, drawing 2-2 at Wisbech Town.
On a heavy pitch it was the hosts who started the liveliest, with Wisbech’s striker Charley Sanders taking advantage of a lethargic Sheffield defence to race through on goal, only to be denied by a good stop by keeper Jonathan Hedge.
The home side took the lead on 14 minutes, Club unable to clear a free kick, with Liam Marshall heading back across the goal for Danny Draper to nip in between the confused defence to head home.
With the visitors still reeling from the goal, Wisbech took less than 60 seconds to double the lead, with Conor Green whipping in a cross which Draper finished from close range.
Sheffield tried to battle back and seemed destined not to get back into the game, as first Marc Newsham was denied by brave keeping by Sam Wilson, whilst Lee Cooksey was denied by the crossbar after the midfielder had broken his marker to win a free header.
The hosts’ big forward Sanders was causing problems up front, and once again found himself free on goal and ready to add to the scoreline, only to be denied by the feet of Hedge once again.
Five minutes before the interval Sheffield pulled a goal back, Cody Prior delivering the corner, with skipper Adam Chapman adding to his rich vein of scoring by heading home through a crowd of players.
With the conditions getting heavier and the pitch resembling a ploughed field, both sides were having difficulty getting the game under control, however Sheffield became the side doing all the pressing.
Club did manage to get the ball in the net, Ben Turner seeing his shot parried by Sam Wilson into the path of Marc Newsham, only to see the goal ruled out for offside.
The constant pressing by Sheffield did leave them prone to being caught on the break, and once again they had to be grateful to keeper Hedge, who denied Sanders a third time after coming out on top on yet another one-on-one situation.
With time running out the visitors finally got the deserved equaliser, Cody Prior getting a low corner into the box, with man of the moment Chapman the one there to direct the ball home to the delight of the away following.
