A modern day club record attendance of 303 braved a chilly November night on Tuesday, witnessing a competitive battle between two combative sides, with Sheffield FC coming from behind to beat Swallownest 3-1 and reaching the quarter finals of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup.
On a heavy pitch the home side dominated proceedings, and managed to take the lead on 5 minutes as the hosts capitalised on a defensive slip, with striker Alex Lill pouncing on the mistake to calmly slot the ball past Jonathan Hedge.
With a shock now on the cards, Swallownest spent the majority of the half camped in the away side’s territory, but with Sheffield on the back foot and struggling to clear their lines the hosts failed to add to their lead.
The second half was a complete reversal of events, but not before Sheffield survived an early scare, with Lill playing Tom Cropper into space whose shot rattled the upright.
Club levelled matters five minutes after the restart, a ball over from the left flank found Marc Newsham unmarked in the middle of the box, with Newsham heading home a typical poacher’s finish.
Chances were far and few between in the game, but the entertainment value never relented, as both sides threw bodies on the line in an attempt to get that vital opening.
That eventually came Sheffield’s way on 75 minutes, Ted Cribley’s corner floated into the box, and with Swallownest unable to clear their lines it was Adam Chapman who volleyed the ball through a crowd into the net.
Club were now in total control and were able to repel anything a tiring Swall side could throw at them, and the tie was made safe in the last minute as once again the Cribley-Chapman combo paid off, this time Chapman getting his head on a Cribley corner to divert the ball home to make it 3-1.
