It was a Monday night Horror Show at a rainy Ashby Avenue for Sheffield FC, as they as served up their worst performance of the season to gift Lincoln United an emphatic and deserved 5-1 victory.
Instead of being able to build on the recent spell of good form and the unbeaten league run, Club soon found themselves on the back foot as in the 12th minute Jack Whightwick intercepted a loose quickly taken free-kick by Ehsan Mohammed, slotting the ball through to Danny North who finished into an empty net after Dylan Parkin’s initial save.
Sheffield should have responded almost immediately, after decent work on the right saw Mitchell Dunne with the goal at his mercy, only to be denied at close range by Michael Emery.
That miss was to prove vital for the visitors, as midway through the half a corner from Charlie West was misjudged by Parkin in the Sheffield goal, giving Mark Gray the easy job of converting the loose ball home.
Six minutes before the break the game was put out of reach, slack defending allowed right back Jack Turnbull to find space on the byline, with the cross being palmed into the path of Wightwick who turned to stroke home from close range.
The visitors’ frustration with their own performance was pretty clear, and when skipper Adam Chapman saw his dipping volley tipped over by Michael Emery, it was evident it wasn’t going to be their night.
Five minutes into the second half Lincoln grabbed a fourth, a long ball over had Sheffield appealing in vain for offside, Danny North carried on to blast home from an angle.
Club managed to get a modicum of respectability with a consolation on 76 minutes, Lee Cooksey bursting down the right to send a cross in, with Mitchell Dunne volleying home from six yards out.
There was not to be a dramatic or historic recovery though, as three minutes from time good work between Danny North and Jamie Goddard saw the number 9 racing through on goal, with Goddard giving Parkin no chance.
Lincoln’s night was soured somewhat as in injury time they were reduced to ten men, as Danny Horton followed up a cynical yellow card with a pretty silly and pointless one, seeing referee Richard Eley brandish a red one to spoil the perfect night for the home side.
