Saturday’s top of the table clash ended all square at Stoke Lane, as league leaders Carlton Town came from behind twice against Sheffield FC, to retain their lead of the Northern Premier South East with a 2-2 draw.

Club started the game very much on the front foot, and should have made the most of several chances that came their way in the opening quarter, with Mitchell Dunne guilty with some very uncharacteristic finishing.

At the other end Aaron Opuku went close, heading over the top, whilst the hosts had a shout rejected for handball in the penalty area and went close again when Opoku lobbed a shot inches over the bar.

Sheffield took the lead on 33 minutes, as a Mitchell Dunne was set free on the left by Marc Newsham, with the cross turned into his own goal by Daniel Brown with Karl Demidh providing the pressure to force the defender’s error.

It was level moments later, as a ball over the top from midfield caused a mix up at the back for the visitors, allowing Opoku to nip in between Jonathan Hedge and Adam Chapman to finish into the empty net.

Club retook the lead on 41 minutes, a Rory Coleman cross from the left picked out Lee Cooksey, who powered in through a mess of bodies to head home at the back post.

Carlton came out in the second half the more positive, but weren’t able to capitalise on their domination, and it was Marc Newsham that was the closest in the opening stages after the restart with a header that was close but over the bar.

Matters were levelled on 70 minutes, Elvis Otim was judged to have been tripped by Darryl Winter in the box, with Tom Maddison finishing from the spot with a calm finish.

Both sides pressed for the vital winner, but despite best efforts, neither was able to get a shot on target in an end-to-end finale.
