A Marc Newsham hat-trick saw Sheffield FC ease through to the next leg of a hopefully long FA Cup odyssey, as the romped to a 4-0 victory over Holbeach United, on a perfect late summer’s afternoon in Lincolnshire. Newsham was unstoppable in the first half as a he completed the perfect three-goal salvo, scoring with his right foot, left foot and head to stun the UCL Premier Division outfit, with Ryan Viggars wrapping things up in the second half.
It was an even opening, however Sheffield were the first to threaten as Jamie Green’s cross to Marc Newsham’s head forcing a great palming save from keeper Rick Drury, giving a brief taste of what was to come. The scoring was opened two minutes later, a raking ball from right back by Josh Burns saw Newsham gallop through in space, and with the keeper caught half way out, the ball was coolly lobbed over Drury into the empty net.
Holbeach did threaten themselves shortly after, Joe Smith getting on the end a free-kick, with young Owen Evans doing well to tip the header wide. It was 2-0 on 27 minutes as Jamie Green and Adam Chapman combined on the left, with Green whipping in a perfect ball to the near post, Newsham once again first to the ball with a diving header that steered the ball home. It should have been three seconds after, Ryan Viggars sticking an excellent cross into the mix, with Newsham blotting his otherwise perfect copybook with a skewed touch.
That third came three minutes before the break, Holbeach defender Luke Wilson playing an absolutely disastrous pass back, allowing Newsham to nip in and take the ball around Drury to slot it home. The hosts’ plight was made even worse at the start of the second half, as frustration took hold of Joe Smith who lashed out at Ash Grayson following a challenge, referee Shaun Gregory having no hesitation producing the red card.
Sheffield’s scoring was completed on the hour, with Adam Chapman splitting the defence with a precise ball through the middle, allowing Viggars to take the ball on and round the keeper to put it into the empty net. There was no coming back from that from the Tigers, and Club were able to cruise home without spending any unnecessary energy, eagerly anticipating the draw for next round.
