The World’s First returned to football after a four month Covid-19 enforced lay off, kicking off in a behind closed doors friendly at Brighouse Town, however the result was far from desirable as the hosts ran out 5-0 winners after a one-sided second half.
With both sides fielding two separate elevens for each half, and both containing numerous trialists, the comparison between the two 45 minutes could not have been starker.
The opening period was a far more balanced affair, however Town had the better of the chances, with Sheffield keeper James Pollard managing to contain the threat by denying Joe Jagger and Eddie Church, before pulling off a fine one-on-one stop with Jagger seemingly through on goal.
It took just moments of the second half for Brighouse to get their first, Sheffield being caught by an end-to-end break, with the lethal Eli Hey making sure of the finish from the edge of the area, leaving Owen Evans with no chance.
Club threatened with some good football at the other end, Alex Wonham striking the crossbar with a vicious shot, and Mo Gashi seeing his effort tipped over the bar by keeper George Clarke.
Clark also denied Jamie Yates with a good save, with the ball being whipped up the other end, Jonathan Hedge denied Eli Hey’s effort with Jack Boyle tapping home the loose ball from close range to make it 2-0.
Moments later it was 3-0, the home trialist wearing the 11-shirt hit a shot at the near post, with Hedge unable to hold the ball.
As time progressed Brighouse’s dominance showed, and it was soon 4-0 as Boyle made a long run through the middle, before unleashing a decent effort from just inside the box.
The scoring was wrapped up just before the end as Boyle wrapped up his hat-trick, running through the defence before making a one-two, before sliding the ball into the corner of the net.
