17 year old Callum McKeown was the hero of the evening on Tuesday, as he held his nerve to slot home the winning penalty at the Big Fella’s Stadium, where Sheffield FC advanced 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the game versus Frickley ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.
The game was a lively affair with both sides treating the tie with a great deal of respect with local pride at stake, as both Club and Athletic fielded strong teams for the game, and despite not creating much in the way of chances it was a highly entertaining game.
It took a matter of seconds for the visitors to go close, with Ted Cribley launching a shot from his own half having seen keeper Thomas Jackson well off the line, the ball however hit the post with Alex Wonham’s rebound well blocked by the defence.
Frickley took the lead on 25 minutes with their first chance, a long ball deceived Bradley Beatson who misjudged the flight, allowing goal-machine Jacob Hazel to take the ball on and finish under Jonathan Hedge.
It was injury time before Sheffield managed an attempt on goal, with James Gregory chipping in from the left wing, and Club’s goal-machine Marc Newsham rising to power a header home to make it 1-1.
The second half saw very little action, and it was near the end before a chance to win it at the death as Tom Clair slid in to win the ball from Hedge, only to squander the opportunity by missing the open goal.
So it went straight to penalties, successful attempts for Frickley by Thomas Davie and Jake Currie sandwiched a very good spot-kick from Brad Beatson, then Matt Roney became the first fail by shooting straight at Thomas Jackson.
Frickley’s advantage was wasted on the next attempt, as Jacob Hazel hashed his kick straight at Hedge, and as Rory Coleman, Michael Hollingworth, Michael Williams all converted theirs it came down to the final two.
Tom Claire’s effort for the hosts went straight at Hedge, leaving Callum McKeown to take centre stage, who finished as cool as you like to put Club into the hat for the next round.
