An incredible five-goal salvo from Alex Wonham saw Luke Herriott’s under 18s side romp into the FA Youth Cup Third Qualifying Round on Thursday, to give Sheffield FC a 7-0 win over shell-shocked Eccleshill United, setting up a mouth-watering tie away at Wrexham the following Wednesday.

In a game that was technically an away game for Club – having had the tie switched due to the Eagles’ home ground being waterlogged – they came racing out of the blocks inside the first 60 seconds to take the lead, Alex Wonham converting his first from the spot after a trip in the area.

The following half hour was a tight contest, Eccleshill looked good on the break, and were unlucky not to draw level after Jonas Ndombasi raced clear on the break only to strike the post with a fierce shot.

Sheffield also rattled the woodwork moments later with Sam Penney’s dipping free-kick hitting the underside of the bar and bouncing to safety, and they should have doubled the lead shortly after when Max Rhodes was through on goal one-on-one with the keeper, only to see Joe Foulds come out on top.

On 30 minutes the Eccleshill goalkeeper went from hero to villain, as referee Michael Brownsett pointed to the spot after the stopper brought down Wonham, with the striker getting up to dispatch the spot-kick.

Two minutes later it was 3-0, Wonham bursting through and seeing his shot blocked by Foulds, Jack Hackford being the liveliest to the rebound and heading home.

Eccleshill had no answer to the constant red tidal wave, and on 37 minutes it was 4-0, with Wonham hitting an absolute worldie from 30 yards out.

In the last minutes of the half Club added another two, Wonham grabbing his fourth after getting behind the defence to make it 5-0, with Max Rhodes making it 6-0 with yet another good finish just on the whistle.

As expected, the second half was an anti-climax with Club easing off quite a bit, with the final goal of the night coming 15 minutes from time, Wonham once again the scorer after some fantastic ball control and turning the spin the ball into the net.
