Sheffield FC crashed out of the FA Trophy in the cruelest of circumstances on Saturday, as they fell to an injury time winner against Clitheroe, with the Lancashire team running out 2-1 winners.
The first half was dominated by the visitors, however the home side were the first to test the water, with Jonathan Hedge tipping a Jacob Gregory shot over the bar.
Club started to turn the screw, and Mitchell Dunne went close with a drive from the edge of the box, with Connor King palming the ball over the bar.
Dunne went close once again moments later, as a Rory Coleman corner was met by the striker, with the shot blocked on the line by defender Andrew Jackson.
The opening goal came on 34 minutes Dunne crossing the ball in to the middle, with Lee Cooksey’s diving header blocked by home skipper Charlie Russell, and Cooksey making certain with the rebound with another header.
In the second half it was Clitheroe that did all the pressing, Terry Cummings’ had an early side-footed shot go close, but other than that it was Club that loked the more dangerous.
Dunne was close yet again, firing across the face of goal after being slipped in by Marc Newsham, with debutant Cody Prior doing a good job being creative in midfield.
On 68 minutes Clitheroe leveled matters up, Oliver Wood winning a header in the box, giving Oscar O’Neill the easy job of tapping in.
The game went end to end at the finish, Connor Gaul could have snatched it for the Blues – the shot wildly blazing over the bar – wáhile James Gregory’s cross was hit wide by Mitchell Duinne.
Clitheroe did get the win though with the last kick of the game, Connor Gaul hurdling a series of desperate challenges from the Club defence, before tucking in the shot to delerious scenes from the home side.
