What a month for the Under 19s!
What a month March was for the 19’s. Our first engagement was away at Chesterfield FC. With a depleted squad, we finally emerged as 4-3 winners. That doesn’t quite tell the story of the game with us easing into a 4-1 lead with goals of extreme quality from Brown & Marsden preceding an injury time blip that saw us concede 2 goals in a minute. The game also saw an awful head injury to Henry Pedler that required immediate hospital treatment & us go down to 10 men after the injury with Super-sub keeper Levi again making his customary appearance on the left wing!!
Our next game was at home to Retford with an even more depleted squad than the Chesterfield game, minus 11 players. However, the boys produced a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from debutant Koroma & despite the odd wobble looked comfortable all night. This was a night where the result was better than the performance and, given the nature of availability, great credit should be given to the whole squad for their willingness to play anywhere on the pitch.
On the 24th, we hosted Worksop Town in the cup quarter-final. Goals from Marsden & Koroma saw us to a 2-0 win and sealed a semi-final against either Swallownest or Sandiacre Town. This was a workmanlike if unspectacular performance but another win and the cup run extended.
Our final game of March was the biggest. We faced league leaders Sheffield United, previously unbeaten & ahead of us by 3 points with the same number of games played. With a strong squad available (Minus Howe & Brown serving suspensions) we travelled to the wilds of Stocksbridge expecting a severe examination. What transpired was hardly that. We controlled play from the early stages & scored through Marsden early on. From then on, Gamble in our goal didn’t have a shot to save. The whole team were superb & all deserve credit as we ran out 1-0 winners. It really was a great squad performance & indicated further the talent that is within our club.
So there we are. We are still 2nd in the table behind Sheffield United, level on points & into the cup ½ finals. Can we catch them? Absolutely & it is in our hands as we play them again at Bracken Moor on the 20th April. Our other 2 remaining league games are against Retford
The invitation is always there. Come down to St Georges Park & watch the future of OUR club in action. There are usually plenty of goals to see. Our next scheduled home game is at home to Retford on the 12th May 7.45 KO with away fixtures against leaders Sheffield United preceding that on the 20th April (at Stocksbridge PS) & Retford on the 2nd May.
