Ladies First Team vs. Doncaster Rovers Belles (0 : 2)
FA WNL Northern Division
Doncaster Rovers Belles came away with the spoils after a close-scrappy game, writes Oli Coultas, edging out fellow strugglers Sheffield FC to win 2-0 in the FA Women's National League Northern Premier division last Sunday.
Captain Isabelle Whittle bagged both goals for the Belles as her side moved level on points with Sheffield in the FA Women’s National League - Sheffield having the superior goal difference stay one place ahead in the league table.
Ellie White had the chance to put Sheffield up in the first minute. A crossfield ball was played through to her, where she took a touch and moved into the box before shooting just wide of Emily Batty’s goal.
It was Sheffield's goalkeeper, Elizabeth Hobson, who was made to make the first save of the game. Emily Brett was allowed time to shoot in the box, lobbing Hobson, who recovered fantastically to push the ball onto the post, off the line, and it was cleared away from danger.
Whittle’s first goal came after twenty minutes. She found herself unmarked in the box from a cross and was allowed the time to volley it past Hobson with a controlled finish, to put the home side ahead.
It took until just before half-time before another chance was seen in what was a stop-start, scrappy half. Holly Housley had the ball bounce to her, where she took a touch and struck it on the half-volley from distance, leaving Batty back-peddling, the ball, unfortunately, hitting the top of the net rather than ending up in it.
The second-half was much like the first, with the scrappy nature of the game being carried on. Lisa Giampalma went close when she volleyed the ball goal-wards, but a good save from Batty saw her push it just around the post for a corner.
Doncaster doubled their lead fifteen minutes from time. A corner was curled into the box and met by the head of Whittle for her second of the afternoon to secure the win for the South Yorkshire side.
It could have been three, if not for a fantastic point-blank save by Hobson from Chloe Bethell’s volley.
Sheffield now shift their attention to the Sheffield and Hallamshire Women's Challenge Cup tie next Sunday, against Hepworth United Ladies FC, kick off 1pm.
