Ladies Development Team vs. Birmingham City (2 : 1)

Sunday, 1 October, 2017 - 14:00
FA WSL Development Northern Division

After last week's late disappointment, Sheffield were visited by last season's FA WSL Development Northern Division runners up, Birmingham City Development.

Both sides came into the fixture with points to prove after opening day defeats and, as a result, the game started in an end to end flurry. It was the visitors who settled the quickest and began to ask questions of the Sheffield defence.

The deadlock was broken on 10 minutes via a Paris McKensie header, after a Birmingham corner made its way to the back post, and the tall Birmingham midfielder powered a firm header into the back of the Sheffield net.

Similar to last week though, Club weren’t to be deterred, and grew into the game to pose a threat themselves, with Ella Hartley and Rhema Lord-Mears the main protagonists.

It was ‘skipper Hartley among the goals again 30 minutes in, after a well-weighted Millee Clarke through ball breached the Birmingham defence, and last season's top scorer ran onto the pass and slotted home to level up the scoreline.

The second half saw the introduction of Georgia Willson, and a fresh enthusiasm from the Sheffield team kept their opponents busy.

Hartley, Clarke, Willson & Lord-Mears all had good chances to put the hosts ahead, and it was the latter that scored what proved to be the winning goal just before the hour mark after a Ruth Likara through ball found the midfielder in on a goal and she made no mistake with an assured finish.

Birmingham tried to put the pressure back on Sheffield, but the young team held firm with strong performances by a dogged back four.

A deserved three points and another good performance, which will no doubt give the squad confidence ahead of their League Cup fixture next Sunday at home to Aston Villa Development.
