First Team vs. Spalding United (1 : 2)

Saturday, 20 October, 2018 - 15:00
Evo-Stik League East Division

A disastrous first ten minutes were enough to condemn Sheffield to defeat on Saturday, writes Stuart James, as Spalding United ran out 2-1 victors to earn their first league win of the season.

After a frantic opening that saw both sides struggle to come to terms with the notorious Sir Halley Stewart surface, the hosts took the lead in the 7th minute, as Club struggled to clear their lines Ben Davison headed the ball through to Cenk Acar who was brought down by a stumbling Tyreece Robinson.

The referee pointed to spot, with Acar stepping up to dispatch a fine spot-kick into the top corner, despite Jonathan Hedge guessing the right way.

Four minutes later the lead was doubled, Acar sending the ball to the left where James Hugo took advantage of an Ashley Grayson stumble, taking the ball on and placing it into the far corner.

The second goal stung the visitors into action, but thr hosts responded with a desperate rearguard action, repelling everything Club threw at them.

Sheffield went closest midway through the half, as Jamie Yates delivered a fine corner into the mix, with Waide Fairhurst directing his header onto the crossbar.

The second half saw more of the one-way traffic. Ehsan Mohammed had a penalty appear waved away, whilst Ashley Grayson headed a Yates corner inches over the bar.

Despite dominating the game Sheffield never really tested the home keeper, however when Mitchell Dunne's back header put James Gregory through, it was an unconvincing stop with the foot by Alex Smith that came to the hosts rescue.

Seconds later Daz Winter headed over, later on substitute Marc Newsham had a chance with a diving header, whilst Spalding offered little more than routine saves for Jonathan Hedge.

Four minutes from time Club finally broke the home side's resistance, a ball on the left was kept in by Mohammed who turned it in to Dunne who chipped from the edge of the area, with keeper Smith allowing the ball to pass him and bounce into the net off the post.

In injury time Sheffield should have salvaged the draw, Adam Chapman's long throw was met by Ehsan Mohammed, and after another unconvincing block by the keeper Grayson couldn't connect with the ball steering it tamely wide.
