First Team vs. Shaw Lane AFC (0 : 2)
Evo-Stik League First Division South
Sheffield FC failed to get their 2016/17 season points total off the mark on Tuesday evening, writes Stuart James, as promotion favourites Shaw Lane proved too canny for a brave Club side running out 2-0 winners.
Both goals came in the second half, after Sheffield had proven more than worthy opponents for the Barnsley outfit in the opening 45 minutes, with Gavin Allott and Kieran Lugsden grabbing close range spoils.
Shaw Lane started the more confident of the two sides, and went closest early on when Kieran Lugsden shot straight at Chris Butt, with Gavin Allott going closer still pulling the ball wide, having more time and space than the visiting defence would like. At the other end Club started to press, but were unable to really test the keeper, with the rest of the half petering out into a gruelling midfield duel.
The opening goal came in the 49th minute, as Jono Wafula showed pace down the left flank to get the ball from the by-line, with ALLOTT steaming in to get the vital touch ahead of the defence at the near post.
This spurred Sheffield into action, and were unfortunate not to get some reward for the effort, with Reece Treasure showing great vision to pick out Andy Ofosu who curled the ball just outside the post.
The game became a more open affair, and the visitors were thankful for an inspired save from Chris Butt, who acrobatically turned the ball over the bar after a powerful header from Dan Wilkinson.
Ten minutes from time the Ducks wrapped things up in similar fashion to their opening goal, this time it was Joe Thornton who broke down the left to cross into the middle, with LUGSDEN rising to nod the ball home.
Sheffield had a chance of a late consolation, with Charlie Dawes releasing a decent strike from thirty yards, only to see Jon Stewart get down to save well.
The defeat puts Sheffield in 21st spot of 22 in the nascent Evo-Stik Division One South table after just two games, however many positives will be taken from the performance, giving plenty of hope ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Ramsbottom United.
