First Team vs. Rugby Town (4 : 2)
Evo-Stik League First Division South
Sheffield finally opened their Evo-Stik account on Saturday at The Home of Football, writes Stuart James, as they came from 2-0 down to run out 4-2 winners against Rugby Town. First half goals from David Kolodynski and an own-goal from Lee Cooksey looked to have sunk Club once again, but Alec Denton’s reply just before the interval sparked a spirited reply, with Dan Partridge grabbing a brace and Andy Ofosu the other to make an amazing turnaround.
Rugby gave warning early on of the danger they posed, with Luke Smithson timing a run to perfection, only to be denied by a fine acrobatic save by Chris Butt.
Sheffield started to dominate and began to play some of the most solid football of the season so far, and could count themselves unlucky not to pull ahead, with Alec Denton and debutant Connor Hall both denied by a terrific double save from Louis Connor.
Hall had another chance on ten minutes, this time pulling the ball wide, whilst the confidence running the team was high enough for Hafeez Hamzat to try his chance from 30 yards – the ball only just flying over the top.
Rugby took the lead in the 24th minute quite against the run of play, as Sam Belcher picked out an excellently timed run from Luke Smithson, who in turn squared the ball for David Kolodynski to tap home.
The second came on 30 minutes, as a calamitous pass from Lee Cooksey was intercepted by Smithson, who ran goalwards before playing the ball against Cooksey for an own-goal.
It really should have been three in injury time, after yet more suicidal defending allowed Andy Gooding to dig the ball out and square into the middle, where Belcher somehow conspired to scoop over the empty net from three yards out.
Sheffield pulled one back seconds later, after the visitors failed to deal with a Matt Roney corner, with Alec Denton turning the ball home in a goalmouth scramble.
Club came out in the second half spurred by the late goal, and levelled on 55 minutes when Ben Partridge picked the ball up 25 yards out, taking a touch before driving beyond the diving keeper.
Partridge tried his luck from a similar area minutes later, with the ball landing in the side netting, whilst substitute Andy Ofosu also hit a long range effort that scraped the upright.
Sheffield took the lead on 70 minutes as Connor Hall burst down the middle, playing the ball out wide to an inspired Matt Roney, whose cross picked out the head of Andy Ofosu to rise and nod into the net.
It could easily have been put to bed ten from time, as Partridge capitalised on a defensive howler to put in Hall, only to be denied by Louis Connor.
Partridge forced another fine save from Connor, as the keeper palmed an excellent free kick over, and wrapped it up in injury time when he raced away to chip over the onrushing keeper to make it 4-2.
