First Team vs. Romulus (2 : 0)
Sheffield extended the winning run to eight games in all competitions with an almost faultless performance at Coles Lane. This has been notoriously a bogey ground for Club, but on this occasion the team made light of a long delayed journey and the weather to see off the Home side, goals from Adam Johnson and Connor Hall taking Club into the next round.
Club's starting line up, as expected was much changed from the team which had performed so well two days before at Northwich. Sam Finlaw and Tom Rose occupied the centre back positions, with Royles and Turner fullbacks; Goodwin, Barlow, Gregory and Hamid comprised the midfield departments with Johnson and Denton forward. Sheffield started on the front foot and Johnson soon got free of the Roms back line, tried a lob over the advancing keeper but the effort was well over the bar.
At the other end, Butt had to be alert to a good effort from Liam Hailey, but Club was dominating the game and Johnson and Denton were a real handful. It was no surprise then just before the half hour that JOHNSON was put through on goal with a lovely ball and shrugging of the attentions of a defender struck a sweet shot into goal 1 - 0 to Sheffield. The remaining 15 minutes were somewhat scrappy and although Romulus went close through a Deville-Cross effort Sheffield closed out well and the half ended 1-0 to the visitors.
Club started the second half brightly; Gregory out Johnson in on goal but his shot cleared the corossbar. In form striker Connor Hall replaced Alec Denton with 10 second half minutes elapsed, and another fine ball across from Gregory was hit over by Johnson.
The inevitable happened just before the hour; HALL, receiving a good ball from Hamid, with the Roms defence completely stretched, was able to take a touch and score to give Club a two goal lead.
Manager James Colliver took the opportunity to give U21 player Joe Bayne his debut, replacing James Gregory, and Jacob France replaced Adam Johnson. Romulus had a couple of half-chances and Butt had to be at his best to deal with a close range effort that the home side claimed had crossed the line.
Sheffield had a glorious chance to score a third when France was through on goal with only the keeper to beat he took to long to get his shot away and Bayne, following up had a good shot well blocked. Roms were down to 10 men at this point, a defender shown a straight red card for a foul on Turner.
All in all a very competent and energetic performance by Sheffield who thoroughly deserved their win.
