First Team vs. Pontefract Collieries (5 : 3)
Evo-Stik League East Division
Sheffield FC grabbed their first win of the season, writes Stuart James, as they ran out 5-3 winners in an entertainment packed thriller against Pontefract Collieries.
Marc Newsham led the way with two goals for Club, whilst Mitch Dunne, Andrew Gascoigne and Jamie Yates added to the tally, with Eli Hey, Jack Greenough and Jamie Picton replying for the visitors.
It was a lively start to the game that set the pace for the next ninety minutes, with the visitors testing the Sheffield defence early on, and Ross Durrant having to be alert to tip an Andrew Gascoigne header over to avoid an own-goal.
At the other end Charlie Wakefield caused issues, whilst Mitch Dunne was a problem with his pace, and went close with a shot that was driven inches wide.
Sheffield took the lead on 17 minutes, as James Gregory burst down the left to cross a deep ball, with Marc Newsham diving to head home.
On 23 minutes it was 2-0, again Gregory making the work on the left, finding Mitchell Dunne in the middle who side-footed home.
Two minutes later Colls pulled one back, a penalty awarded for a trip in the box, Eli Hey driving home.
Club pressed to regain the two goal advantage, Newsham again going close, with both Dunne and Gregory adding to the visitors’ worries.
On 36 minutes Ponte levelled, Cody Cromack crossing into the mix, and Jack Greenhough jumping highest to loop a header over the keeper.
The lead could and probably should have swung the visitors’ way, as first they hit the bar, and moments after Hey missed a sitter from five yards out.
It took less than a minute after the restart for Club to get back in front, Charlie Wakefield crossing from the left, with Jamie Yates heading in.
Club could have extended their lead, as Gregory once again tormented the defence, with Newsham blasting an effort over the bar.
Pontefract levelled once again on 65 minutes, Conner Smythe sending a free-kick in, and Jake Picton flicking a header into the net.
The lead swung to the home side yet again, after Jamie Williams wrestled James Gregory to the ground, Andrew Gascoigne dispatching a beauty of a free-kick to the top corner.
The chances kept coming at both ends, and it seemed that there would be at least another goal in the contest, with the next goal deciding the result.
As it turned out it was Club that wrapped things up three minutes from time, Dunne doing the hard work on the right hand side, setting up a simple tap-in for Newsham to the delight of the home fans.
Sadly things were soured unnecessarily as there was an altercation in the middle of the park, which saw Vaughan Redford shown a red card for being the instigator, followed immediately by a scuffle between the benches that saw one from each coaching staff shown a red card also.
There was still time for Andrew Gascoigne to go close, meaning Sheffield were able to cruise to the full time whistle without issues, and deservedly get the first win of the season under their belt.
