First Team vs. Penistone Church (2 : 1)
Sheffield won their first game of the 2018/19 pre-season campaign on Saturday, as they ran out 2-1 winners on another scorching hot summer’s day, beating Northern Counties East side Penistone Church.
On a rock-hard pitch, Club started the brightest, as Zeph Thomas went close twice – the first with a free-kick, the second reacting quick, only to stab the ball wide.
Penistone for their part gave an excellent account of themselves, and new signing Connor Glavin was far from shy on his debut, going close twice after trying his luck from distance.
The deadlock was broken on 36 minutes, as Andrew Gascoigne – returning from a serious bout of salmonella – drove a shot from 25 yards that dipped into the bottom corner.
The hosts pressed for the rest of the first half, with Jamie Ingham forced into a reflex save to stop Julian Lawrence deflected an effort into his own net, whilst two more efforts from the home side went either side of the post.
In the second half Penistone hit the bar with a great move on the right, with a second shot going not too far moments later in the fallout from the same attack.
With 15 minutes remaining Church grabbed a deserved equaliser, a bursting break down the right wing caught Sheffield out of shape, with the cross being tapped in by the veteran Andy Ring.
Club snatched victory in the 82nd minute, as youngsters Easham Mohammed and James Hastings teed up the ball for Leon Osborne, who picked his spot to curl the ball into the bottom corner.
Sheffield squad: Ingham, Turner, Eagle, Wright, Kay, Lawrence, Mackie, Gascoigne, Newsham, Thomas, Gregory. Subs: Downes, Mohammed, Yates, Osborne, Hastings, Purkiss, White, Chapell.
