First Team vs. Ossett United (0 : 1)
Evo-Stik League East Division
Sheffield FC lost a tight battle of attrition on Saturday, writes Stuart James, as an early Chris Chantler gave Ossett United a 1-0 at Ingfield.
It was a lively start to the game for the visitors, and Rob Darkin was the first to get a shot on target, with the full-back's volley well stopped by ex-Sheffield keeper Brett Souter.
On six minutes came the moment that was proven to decide the game, Shiraz Khan was left unattended from a quick throw-in, lobbing a cross in to the equally unmarked CHANTLER who volleyed home.
From this moment on Club were the team doing all the pressing, but the experienced heads at the heart of Ossett's defence kept the visitors at bay, with chances at a premium.
The closest they came in the first period was from Mitchell Dunne, who eked enough space out to let a long distance strike go, with Souter either misjudging the shot - or showing confidence bordering on bravado - as the ball hit the upright with everyoe stood watching.
After the interval chances were still at a premium, with no real close efforts produced from either side, despite Sheffield continuing to press down the slope.
James Gregory had the best chance, following Souter making a bad decision with coming for a ball Dunne was going to win all day long, with the end shot going for inches over the bar.
The game was soured in the dying moments, as Club's Matty Downing went in for a strong challenge with United's Adam Porritt, with the Sheffield substitute coming off worse with aa suspected broken leg.
Even with nine minutes added, and with wave after wave of Sheffield pressure, the ten man visiting side could not break down the resilience of the hosts who held on for a valuable three points.
