First Team vs. Ossett Town (0 : 2)
Sheffield FC’s FA Cup dreams were thwarted with a disappointing home defeat on Saturday, writes Stuart James, as they were undone by two set-piece goals in a 2-0 loss against North Division Ossett Town.
An own-goal from keeper Brett Souter gave the Ingfielders the lead in the 38th minute, whilst another lapse at the back sealed a next round home tie against Consett, when Josh Snowden headed in a second on 70 minutes.
Sheffield started the livelier of the two sides, however their cause and plans weren’t helped, when influential midfielder Andrew Gascoigne limped off after less than ten minutes.
Despite this Club continued to play some tidy football, and came closest early on when Ritchie Humphreys quick free kick was lofted into the area, with Jack Mawson having more time and space than his finish deserved.
Midway through the half Town started to find a way into the game, and started creating chances of their own, with Nathan Curtis trying his luck with a dipping volley from distance that wasn’t far off the mark.
Ash Jackson had a curling shot from the left drift just wide, for Ossett whilst Curtis had another chance moments later, one that was deflected wide for a corner.
It was from that corner that saw the deadlock broken, as a dangerous ball in from Steve Ridley cause problems for Brett Souter in the Sheffield goal - with makeshift defender Lee Morris barged into the keeper by an Ossett forward - making Souter palm the ball into his own net for an OWN-GOAL.
The second period saw the visitors start more positively, and had a glorious opportunity early on when skipper Max Peterson was gifted a chance, only to see the Ossett man pull a rather feeble effort wide of the mark.
The lead was eventually doubled after Sheffield conceded another needless corner, again it was Ridley who sent the ball in, this time JACKSON was unmarked in the middle to steer his header into the far corner.
Souter made up for his earlier error with a fine double save, denying Peterson with a fine block with his feet first, followed by a brave stop with his hands.
Club sparked into life in the last fifteen minutes, with a desperate attempt to salvage the tie, however they were unable to get the rub of the green.
James Gregory sent a ball into the middle, and with an unmarked header in their favour, the direction from substitute Mohammed Tijani was wayward to say the least.
Joel Purkiss had a drive from around the thirty yard mark, again the shot was off target, whilst Tijani had another chance in stoppage time - forcing a great point blank block from Leigh Overton.
