League Cup

Sheffield FC exited the Integro League Cup on Tuesday night, writes Stuart James, losing 2-1 to Newcastle Town in an enthralling contest at the Lyme Valley Stadium. Castle were victorious thanks to a 26th minute Luke Askey goal, and a 64th minute Chris Baker strike, with Club’s response a 69th minute consolation from Andrew Gascoigne.

Club had much of the better opportunities in the first half, with Connor Brunt going close on a couple of occasions – the first after good work from Gascoigne to dispossess the defender – whilst Kieron Watson had a great chance after breaking through the defence on the right, only to shoot wide.

Newcastle eventually were the ones to break the deadlock after a spell of sustained pressure, which saw Sheffield struggle to clear their lines, eventually seeing Joe Thomas’ cross steered home by ASKEY

The visitors continued to force the pressure at the other end, however weren’t able to capitalise on a 50 yard run by Watson which ended with a tame shot at the keeper, whilst Ross Goodwin saw his shot from distance deflected wide.

The game seemed to be put to bed as a contest midway through the second half, as Danny South was caught in possession, allowing BAKER to run on and finish clinically.

Sheffield responded quickly, and pulled one back five minutes later when Ross Goodwin’s header rebounded off the bar, only for GASCOIGNE to react quickest to nod home from close range.

It finished in a frantic fashion as Sheffield poured forward, only to be met by a solid wall of defence, with the best chance falling to South whose header from a Roney cross just lacked the power to cause any real threat to the Newcastle keeper.
