First Team vs. Marske United (0 : 4)

Evo-Stik League East Division

Sheffield FC fell to a disappointing opening day defeat, writes Stuart James, as newly promoted Northern League Champions Marske United ran out comfortable 4-0 winners at the GER Stadium.

Marske were the ones to start brightest, and should really have opened the scoring on 11 minutes, following a cross from Owens that really should have been buried by Carling. Liddle also tried his luck for the hosts, driving from the edge of the area, only to be denied by Turton in the Sheffield goal.

Club had their chances to break the deadlock, as Turner’s long ball was picked up on the run by Dunne, unfortunately the Sheffield man could get a clean enough shot. Newsham had a chance seconds later, following a chest down by Gascoigne, the shot just off target.

On 28 minutes the hosts managed to get on the scoresheet, Eagle was harshly penalised in a dangerous position for a foul on Gott, with GOTT curling the free-kick into the corner of the net with Turton flat-footed. Moments after the hosts had a chance to double the lead, as Liddle saw his shot deflected just wide of the mark.

Sheffield eventually broke from their slumber, with Gregory heading on a solo run that ended with the winger shooting into the side netting. Rowbotham struck the post for Marske, before the visitors had the best chance of the half after Mackie’s run set up Dunne, with keeper Dean saving bravely at his feet.

The early exchanges in the second period saw Butterworth shooting straight at the keeper, whilst Dunne did likewise from distance at the other end, with the keeper making easy work of the effort.  The second came ten minutes after the restart, as Martin floated a free-kick from the right, with OWENS getting front to bury the easiest of headers.

Club’s afternoon was made all the more difficult a minute later, as skipper Gascoigne was shown a straight red for abusive language, making the last 30 minutes an uphill struggle. Turner had to come to the rescue to deny Gott, after the midfielder had rounded the keeper with the goal at his mercy.

Sheffield rattled the bar with a Dunne free-kick, and saw an effort cleared off the line after an Osborne run, but the goal wasn’t forthcoming.

Ten minutes from time it was 3-0, as Martin’s cross was poorly defended, MAY getting on the end to head home.

On 83 minutes it was 4-0, Sheffield seemingly out on their feet, allowing OWENS to take his time to toe-poke home.

In injury time Club had a chance of a consolation, with Dunne once again going close, striking the foot of the post after hitting on the turn.
