First Team vs. Market Drayton Town (1 : 1)

Evo-Stik League First Division South

Sheffield FC were held to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, writes Stuart James, as they came from behind to draw at Market Drayton Town. In a game of two distinct opposite halves, Club fell behind to a 23rd minute goal from Dan Beddows, before storming back in an entertaining second half with a 46th minute strike from Joel Purkiss.

Playing up the hill in the first period, Sheffield found themselves embroiled in a dour battle between two sides each looking for their first win of the season, and as a result chances were really at a premium.

The best opportunity for the visitors came from a long raking ball from Jack Turnbull, one that was plucked out of the air with a sublime touch from James Gregory, sadly after all the hard work had been done the end result was a very tame shot.

Drayton opened the scoring from their first meaningful attack - a free-kick thirty yards from goal awarded after a Ross Goodwin handball - Mike O’Reilly drove a fierce shot in, keeper Brett Souter spilled it, and on the spot quickest was the home skipper BEDDOWS who planted the rebound home.

As far as action in the first half goes, that was it - however one highlight was a fantastic run from James Gregory, beating several players, sadly after all the hard work had been done the end result was another very tame shot.
Club made a half-time substitution, replacing the embattled Jack Mawson with Joel Purkiss, and it was a change that was to reap instant dividends.

Some neat play down the right wing saw Turnbull square the ball across the 18-yard box, from where PURKISS curled an exquisite effort, leaving Ashley Rawlins no chance in the Drayton goal.

The goal sparked a mass of confidence from the visitors and they could have gone into the lead moments later, when Mohammed Tijani burst through two defenders as if they weren’t there, with a combination of keeper and defender blocking the youngster’s effort.

The one way traffic was punctuated once or twice with the hosts capitalising on brief Sheffield lapses, with Jud Ellis capitalising on a poor clearance to send a long ball over to pick out Joe Cuff, the winger’s shot being hooked across the face of goal.

Club resumed the pressure, going close from Lee Cooksey, whilst some good work from Lewis Price and Matty Waller fed Joel Purkiss with a chance that wasn’t too far over.

Waller was the provider of the next chance as well, a well worked cross from the right wing picked out James Gregory, with the shot deflected wide by Sean Griffiths.

Drayton had one final chance in the last five minutes, Charles Knowles did some good work down the left, giving Andre James a golden opportunity that was scuffed safely into the hands of Souter.

In the final seconds of injury time Sheffield nearly snatched all three points, as Waller provided another assist, this time to Purkiss who forced a very good save from Rawlins to rescue a hard-earned point from the hosts.
