First Team vs. Market Drayton Town (5 : 0)
Evo-Stik League First Division South
Sheffield FC went on the rampage on Saturday afternoon, writes Stuart James, as they ran in five without reply at Market Drayton Town completing a successful seven days on the road.
Club were in merciless mood and made the frustrations of the last few weeks a distant memory, playing some fantastic football - and if not for some wasteful finishing -they could easily have hit double figures.
Leading the way with the scoring with a brace was Connor Hall, playing what could be his last game on loan at S18, with Matt Roney, Alec Denton and Ben Partridge completing the rout.
Things could have so much different if the first few minutes hadn’t seen Chris Butt make some vital stops, as Club looked hesitant at the back, with the swirling wind taking some getting used to. Sheffield took the lead on 14 minutes, as Mohammed Hamid threaded the ball through to HALL, who swept the ball past Rawlins.
Drayton had no answer to the pace on the break from the visitors, with Hamid, Denton and Roney torturing the defence, with Hall winning everything in the air to keep the pressure on. The lead was doubled on 25 minutes as Hall fed the ball to Denton in the box, the defence stood and watched as the move went onto RONEY, who took great delight in nutmegging his marker before sliding the ball into the corner.
Five minutes later it was game, set and match, as Drayton – still reeling from a Roney effort that skimmed the bar – watched in horror as HALL weaved in through the defence and around the keeper, and rolled it home for 3-0.
Ashley Rawlins was the one man stopping Club running up a hatful before the break, making two outstanding saves, denying Alec Denton on both occasions. The keeper continued to frustrate Denton after the break too, and made two very brave stops from point blank shots, as Sheffield continued to run riot through the Drayton defence.
The fourth inevitably came Sheffield’s way, as the non-stop badgering of Pat Lindley paid dividends in dispossessing a hesitant Rawlins, squaring the ball across the face of the goal to give DENTON the goal he deserved.
Man of the Match Connor Hall became provider seven minutes from time, as his pass split the defenced, giving PARTRIDGE time and space to curl and exquisite shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.
It would be no exaggeration to say Club could have easily made double figures if they had capitalised on the gilt-edged chances that came their way, with Denton wasting an amazing chance with five to go, as the referee played an excellent advantage, only to see the forward tap the ball into the keeper’s hands with the goal at his mercy.
The sixth was destined not to come, and was summed up when Partridge was lazily tripped in the box to gift Club a penalty, only for Denton to send the ball high, wide and somewhere near the Müller Corner factory.
The win takes Sheffield up into 13th place in the Evo-Stik Division One South table, with the next game coming on Tuesday evening, when they travel to 15th placed Gresley.
