First Team vs. Lincoln United (1 : 4)
Evo-Stik League First Division South
Sheffield FC remain at the foot of the Evo-Stik South division; writes Stuart James, as they committed footballing suicide with a 4-1 loss at Lincoln United on Wednesday evening. After a shocking first half that saw Club concede a soft early goal, a chaotic own goal, a red card and missing a penalty, it was always going to be an impossible task to rescue anything from the game.
The game started with an optimistic shot from the kick off by Jamie Yates, which didn't land too far off the mark, however the tone was soon set with Lincoln going close with a Rob Norris shot being deflected just over.
Lincoln began to exert the pressure on the visitors and were rewarded with the opening goal on 8 minutes, Sean Wright floating a routine free kick into the box, with James Blunden stooping to flick a header beyond the reach of Matt Yates.
Sheffield responded to the setback by pressing forward, with the best move seeing Luis Morrison picking out James Gregory, with Ben Turner blasting the ball over the bar.
The home side doubled the lead on 25 minutes, as a cross into the box was directed onto the bar by a Sheffield defender, with the rebound hooked into his own goal by Morrison under pressure from Paul Grimes.
Club's task was made even more troubling on the half hour mark, as referee Kenwyn Hughes produced a straight red card for Adam Chapman; with the Sheffield midfielder choosing an inappropriately quiet moment to dish out some offensive language.
If anything, this stirred the visitors from their slumber, and moments later Gascoigne mesmerized the Whites' defence with a meandering run which concluded with him being upended in the box, and referee Hughes pointing to the spot.
However, in line with summing up Sheffield’s half, Grant Ryan stepped up to take the spot kick, with Michael Emery making a fine save to frustrate the visitors further.
The second half saw Sheffield start with much more purpose, and three minutes in they had pulled one back, with Damian Magee drilling home a poorly cleared corner.
All the hard work was undone on the 68th minute as Kallum Smith was tripped in the area by the hardworking Ben Turner, this time Lincoln made sure from the spot with Andy Toyne using his first touch after coming on as substitute by powering home the penalty despite the best efforts of Matt Yates.
On 76 minutes Lincoln got the fourth, effectively putting the game beyond doubt, with Toyne turning provider with a cross to the back post, finding Grimes in acres of space to power a header home.
