First Team vs. Leek Town (2 : 1)
Evo-Stik League First Division South
Club doubled their season’s points tally at the Home of Football on Saturday, writes Stuart James, as they came from behind to beat Leek Town in a scrappy game.
The visitors started the game strongest, and had opportunities to open the scoring with Tom France lashing a great opportunity wildly wide, and Chris Budrys scraped the outside of the post after great build up play from Tim Grice and Sam Grimshaw.
They eventually took the lead of 25 minutes, as a break down the left hand side found GRICE unmarked in the centre of the box, with the striker making no mistake tucking the ball under debutant keeper Steve Hernandez.
Sheffield started to come back into the game, and a free-kick by Ben Partridge put into the mix brought defensive confusion, with Alec Denton denied twice at close range by Chris Martin.
Sheffield levelled matters on the half hour mark, as Leek failed to deal with another Ben Partridge free-kick, the ball fell to Matt Roney who teed up DENTON to drive home.
It was 2-1 five minutes before the break, as yet again the Leek defence failed to clear, this time home skipper COOKSEY surprised everyone including himself by scoring with a bicycle kick.
The second half saw the hosts have several chances to wrap matters up, but with Denton driving two glorious chances wide and substitute Sam Finlaw hooking another one off target, Club couldn’t see themselves over the line.
Leek had a great chance to grab a point, as Grice rounded Hernandez to get a shot on goal, however the once the trusty forward couldn’t get the power on the ball allowing Cooksey to be the hero again to clear off the line.
