First Team vs. Hemsworth Miners Welfare (4 : 1)

Tuesday, 6 November, 2012 - 19:45
Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup

Sheffield coasted into the quarter finals of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup, writes Andy Dixon, as a makeshift side brushed away Hemsworth at a chilly MDC Sports Stadium. Club were four goals to the good at half time, with Shaq McKenzie (21 minutes), Steve Woolley (24), Andy Gascoigne (38) and Anton Foster (44) all finding the back of the net in a one-sided half. The second half was a scrappy affair, and was pretty forgettable for Curtis Woodhouse, as his first appearance of the season ended in a red card. Youngster Reece White had a mixed debut for Club, becoming possibly the youngest player to wear the captain's armband following Anton Foster's substitution, then turning into his own net five minutes before the end.

Hemsworth started the brighter of the two sides, and had the first chance of the night, when Neil Towler saw his shot palmed away well by Liam Flynn in the Sheffield goal. The hosts put the pressure on and had Club rattled slightly with a couple of scrambles, but the visitors showed they were a side to be reckoned with as Ellis Wall put a through ball to Shaq McKenzie, leaving the striker one-on-one with the keeper only to slice the ball wide. Sheffield started to exert the pressure, and on 21 minutes took the lead, as Wall put a brilliant ball in from the left allowing McKENZIE to slip past the keeper and roll the ball home.

The lead was doubled just three minutes later, as James Knowles produced a quality touch to put in Matt Roney, who in turn produced a quality cross to WOOLLEY who volleyed home. Sheffield were the team in the ascendancy, as seconds later the Roney - Woolley combination nearly came up trumps again, this time the shot ended up inches wide.

Sheffield were clearly on top and whilst Ellis Wall orchestrated the game in midfield, McKenzie and Woolley were threatening with pot-shots, so it was no surprise that the visitors added a third seven minutes before the break. McKenzie headed the ball back into the danger area after the ball was only half cleared, and the middle to take the ball down, turn and drive the ball home was GASCOIGNE. It got even better seconds before the break as McKenzie was fouled at the edge of the area; Woolley floated the ball into the box, and at the back post to slide it home from close range was FOSTER.

As in the first half Welfare came out the livelier after the restart, with Towler again the man threatening by heading against the bar, whilst Jamie Hadfield did well to deny Hirst. The game started to get a little scrappy in places, however shots from Woolley and Gascoigne that were stopped gave hope that it wasn't the end of the entertainment... and it wasn't. Manager Curtis Woodhouse made his first appearance in a Sheffield shirt since his return to the Club, as the game was starting to get a little bit feisty; however it wasn't to last long as he soon found himself on the receiving end of a red card just six minutes after replacing Steve Woolley.

The hosts managed to get something of a consolation as Stor put a ball into the box, and under pressure from Jack Wakefield, Reece White put the ball into his net for an OWN-GOAL. Hemsworth threatened to add to their tally in the last five minutes, with Towler seeing his effort cleared off the line, but Sheffield were solid enough to hold on to their three goal lead.
