First Team vs. Hemsworth Miners Welfare (4 : 0)
Sheffield FC earned a first pre-season victory on Tuesday night, writes Stuart James, as the beat a hard-working Hemsworth Miners Welfare at the Yorkshire NuBuilds Stadium. After a goal-less first half, Club broke free after the break, running in four unanswered goals in the second period.
It was a tight first half with very few chances, the first coming just before the half hour mark when Joel Purkiss intercepted a lazy pass across defence, only to see his lob finish just over the bar.
Hemsworth had their best chance moments later, as Sam Jones hit a drive from 30 yards which was parried by Brett Souter, with Lloyd Henderson heading the rebound straight at the keeper.
Club managed to get the ball in the net, after Andrew Gascoigne bustled through the defence to tee up Jack Mawson, who tucked the ball home only to be flagged offside.
The second half saw Sheffield finally break free, and it took just three minutes to break the deadlock, as Ben Algar’s free-kick from the left flank was nodded home by MAWSON to give the visitors the lead.
Ten minutes later it was 2-0, a ball down the right found MAWSON once again, this time his first time effort was too much for the keeper to handle with the ball squirming inside the post.
Moments later Club added another, PURKISS was allowed too much time and space in the middle of the park, with the striker driving a low shot home from 30 yards out.
With the hosts making a flurry of changes, the spaces started to show for Club and they should really have added to the total from a Joel Purkiss corner, with Jack Turnbull having a free header directed wide.
Hemsworth had a chance to pull one back with a header that struck the bar, whilst at the other end Hotheyfa Gadour had a chance to extend the lead after breaking in from the left, only to see the keeper block his effort.
The scoring was wrapped up two minutes from time, as Development Team prospects Hotheyfa Gadour and Matt Morton combined, with Gadour threading the ball through to MORTON who in turn tucked the ball under the oncoming keeper.
