Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup

Sheffield progressed to the last eight of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Cup thanks to a late winner against a determined Hallam FC tonight at the BT Local Business Stadium writes Roy France. On a crisp evening Club were pulled back twice before Aaron Martin’s header proved decisive.

Sheffield went ahead in the first minute when Shaq McKenzie was played through the middle and he finished low and coolly into the left corner past Andy Coulson. The early stages of the were played out a fast pace with Hallam eager to show their ability despite the two division difference.

It was the home side who were creating the chances though as firstly Jared Stephens volleyed just wide from a James Knowles header and then Andy Gascoigne’s 20 yard shot was saved by a prostrate Coulson. However midway through the half Hallam drew level when a superb swerving long range effort from Ben Kistell beat Liam Flynn all ends up.

Club responded well as McKenzie set up Chris Adam but he too fired wide then Coulson was sharp to parry another Stephen s’ effort. Adam swapped wings to the right and put in three good crosses but no-one could get on the end of them. Just before the break Charlie Anderson gave away possession, the ball breaking to Scott Whittington whose lob volley was spectacularly turned onto the cross bar by Flynn to conclude an entertaining 45 minutes.

The game drifted somewhat after the break, with Hallam possibly having the better of the play, but on 65 minutes Sheffield forged ahead again. James Knowles floated over a free-kick from the right and Gascoigne met it with a thundering header to bulge the net from six yards. The lead was only to last five minutes though as when Flynn punched clear in a Hallam attack the ball was returned to the unmarked Liam Morris who swivelled and gleefully swept home to make it 2-2.

Extra time looked odds on, as both sides battled for the winner. Gascoigne went close again, but it was not until the 89th minute that the deadlock was broken. A deep cross from the left found the head of Martin and he placed it deliberately and carefully into the left corner to wrap things up.
