First Team vs. Gresley FC (1 : 1)

Tuesday, 8 November, 2016 - 19:45
Evo-Stik League First Division South

Sheffield’s unbeaten run continued with a hard-earned point at Gresley FC; Club falling behind 10 minutes before half-time to a Matthew Melbourne tap-in; Skipper Lee Cooksey lashing home a fully deserved 25 yard equaliser in the 5th minute of added time at the end of a competitive game in difficult conditions.

Club began brightly, the hosts gifting them the chance to take up some good attacking positions, and Connor Hall with the first effort on goal for the visitors, Rob Peet being forced into a good save. Alec Denton had a shot palmed away, with Hall following up, Peet did well to gather up. Gresley was using width to good effect but Sheffield’s defensive partnership of Lee Cooksey and Corbin Shires were not unduly troubled. Danger man Pearson Mwanyongo had a couple of half-chances,  but  Gresley took the lead on 34 minutes, after the ball had been lost on the right side of midfield; Leandro Browne was fouled in the danger zone and Chris Butt could only palm the ball onto the bar and from the rebound, Melbourne was quickest to react and score from very close range. Club responded well and from the restart, Denton was in on goal and hit the side netting. Towards the end of the half Club had a penalty claim turned down after Denton’s shot looked to have struck a defender’s hand, and it was Butt who made a decent save at his near post from Courtney Meade in almost the last action and after 45 minutes the score was 1-0 in favour of the Home side.

There were no changes to the teams at half-time; Cooksey got into a good position early on, and Connor Hall made a good run forward resulting in a corner to Sheffield. Shires went down in a heap and had to be stretchered off with a knee injury; manager James Colliver making a double change with Damian Magee replacing Shires and Ben Partridge coming on for Mo Hamid. Sam Finlay was having a good game in midfield and a good move started by him had Hall in on goal his shot at the near post just wide. Partridge made a good run forward and was fouled. Hall’s free kick wasn't his best and was cleared, and from the break, Butt was down well to deny Meade. Hall had another super effort well saved by Peet as Club pressed for the equaliser their determination deserved. Partridge did well on the right and got in a deep cross that Cooksey headed at the Gresley ‘keeper, but from a corner, the ball was defended away but fell to the Sheffield skipper who sent a quality strike into the top corner of the goal to level the scores with a couple of the 7 minutes added time remaining. Sheffield almost had the chance to snatch all three points with a free-kick in a dangerous position, and were on the front foot at the finish, the final score 1-1 and all agreed a fair reflection of the evening’s proceedings.
