First Team vs. Chasetown (3 : 4)
Evo-Stik League First Division South
It was a stunned Sheffield FC side that left the Scholars Ground pitch on Tuesday night, writes Stuart James, as they somehow conspired to let a three goal lead go and lose a thrilling game 4-3.
There was no indication of the drama that was to follow, as despite Chasetown starting brightly, Club always seemed to have things under control.
The hosts were denied by Brett Souter early on, as Michael Williams fed Jake Lovatt with a shot, whilst Lovatt was once again denied by a brave defensive block.
Club soon settled and took a well-deserved lead on ten minutes, as James Gregory broke clear down the left wing, squaring into the middle for TIJANI to smash home from close range.
Jake Lovatt was denied twice more by Souter in the Sheffield goal, firstly forcing a fine save from the visiting stopper, whilst shortly after the goalkeeper was able to make another effort look rather routine.
Just before the interval there was a moment of absolute magic, as Jack Brownell stepped up to take a free-kick awarded after Joel Purkiss was hauled down on the edge of the areas, with the free-kick from BROWNELL taking an absurd curl into the far top corner of the net.
There was still time for Club to threaten once more before the interval, as once again Gregory burst through a paper-thin defence, only to finish with a shot straight at Curtis Pond.
After the break Sheffield continued to push forward, and had a goal ruled out minutes after the restart following good work from Mohammed Tijani, Lewis Price and Joel Purkiss saw the ball end up in the net, only to disallowed even though defender Williams was on the goal-line.
The chances continued to come, and when Purkiss’ neatly directed flick-header put Gregory in one-on-one with Pond, the finish was disappointingly outside the post.
It seemed not to matter moments later, as Price and Tijani showed some neat interplay, with Price setting the ball back for PURKISS to prodding the ball over the line with a toe-poke.
A triple substitution by the home side seemed to inspire them somewhat, and within five minutes they had pulled a goal back as Chris Baker rose at the far post to nod a cross back across the face of goal and NDUNA netted from close range.
Within a minute it was 3-2, as substitute Ryan Wynter forced a save from Souter, and CATER slotting the rebound in from a very tight angle.
With Club on the ropes it almost seemed inevitable that Chasetown would level matters, and on 74 minutes they got that third as Cater got behind the defence to whip a ball across the face of goal, with LOVATT sliding in first to force the ball over the line.
It was a nervy final fifteen minutes for Sheffield, and just when it looked like they would be ruing the loss of two points from a nailed on win, Lovatt was fouled in a dangerous spot on the edge of the area - up stepped substitute SEDGLEY who drilled the free-kick through the wall and giving the hosts an unlikely win
