First Team vs. Chasetown (0 : 0)
Evo-Stik League First Division South
Sheffield FC and Chasetown battled out a gruelling goal-less draw at the Scholars Ground on Saturday, writes Stuart James, as neither side could find the crucial opening on a difficult pitch.
An early free kick from Jack Langston went close, but that was as close as the hosts got in the game, as they failed to truly test Chris Butt for the whole ninety minutes.
Chasetown's Jamie Sheldon had couple of efforts on target, but neither of them troubled the young Sheffield keeper, both calmly collected by some safe hands.
Ben Turner had the firat chance of the game for Club, again this hardly troubled Chris Pond in the hosts' net, with Turner"s assist to James Gregory minutes later a victim of a bobbling pitch - with the shot wayward at best.
If anything Chasetown were stifled by some solid defending by the away side, limiting their attempts to a couple of long distance efforts - one from Langston, one from Sheldon - neither made Butt break sweat to gather the ball.
The second half saw a bit more adventure from Sheffield, and it took a brave defensive block early on to stop Club taking an early lead, as Alec Denton turned and hit a stinging drive that looked destined for the goal.
Butt finally was forced to make a save of note as Chasetown finally got through the red wall to get into a decent position, Joseph Thomas was allowed too much time and space in the box to get a good shot off, the keeper though was more than up to the task with a fine save with his foot.
As far as threats went, that was to be it from the hosts, and Sheffield started to head forward in search of blood.
Alex Pursehouse rattled the bar from a viciously inswinging corner, one that had Curtis Pond beaten all ends up, followed shortly after by a Joel Purkiss drive that the keeper had to reach for.
The closest effort of the game though was reserved for the visitors, as a Pursehouse free-kick picked out Danny South's head in a crowded box, and with everyone transfixed the ball thundered against the upright.
Chasetown did have a late sortie in search of a late winner, with Josh Ruff having a deflected shot spin wildly in the air, once more though Chris Butt made it look oh so simple.
