First Team vs. Carlton Town (3 : 1)

Tuesday, 1 November, 2016 - 19:45
Evo-Stik League First Division South

Following a hard-earned first away point of the season at Basford United, Sheffield paid a second visit to Nottingham in the space of three days and gained an away win, with three priceless points at the one-time bogey ground of Carlton Town FC.

Goalkeeper Chris Butt was the difference between the two sides in the opening minutes with two vital interventions; the first a point-blank instinctive save from Daniel Gordon's snap shot, then his clearance upfield fell exactly where Connor Hall needed it, the young striker making no mistake to give Club the lead within two minutes. Corbin Shires had Sheffield's next attempt at goal, a very good half volley curling just the wrong side of goal, but in the next action, Carlton Town equalised, free-kick danger man Daniel Gordon beating Sheffield's defensive wall and Butt with another super strike from 20 yards. For Club, Brian Cusworth latched on to a stray defensive clearance and laid off to Hall, but he couldn't get enough purchase on the ball to make a solid attempt at goal. Sheffield restored their lead on 24 minutes, Matt Roney's corner kick headed on by Shires and from a rebound, Pat Lindley quickest to react and shoot home. Sheffield now began to play with some confidence and Hall set up Cusworth who forced Jack Steggles to make a very good save. Sheffield extended their advantage on 36 minutes, Hall bagging his second with a super finish after Roney had headed on.

Sheffield made a half-time substitution; Cusworth, having taken a knock to the ribs, was replaced by Ross Goodwin. Sheffield started the second period on the front foot; Hall almost in on goal and from a corner Shires showed some skill in the penalty area and sent a decent strike wide of the far post. Hall had another chance to further extend Sheffield's lead; shrugging off the close attentions of Romaine Graham, his shot was hit over the goal with just Steggles to beat. Mo Hamid was having a good game and made a strong run forward, a good ball in to Hall which just bounced awkwardly as he hit it. James Gregory replaced Matt Roney with 64 minutes on the clock, he was involved straightaway, fouled just outside the "D", Hamid's free-kick looked to have taken a deflection on its way just the wrong side of the Carlton goal. Carlton had the better of the closing 20 minutes without creating too many clear-cut chances; Butt was alert to a good cross/shot from the left, and Goodwin made a good defensive header from a corner. In the closing moments Carlton had the ball in the net but the effort was disallowed for a foul and at the final whistle the score was Carlton Town FC 1 - 3 Sheffield FC.

Unfortunately, enjoyment of the game was spoiled by the behaviour of some individuals in a section of our supporters. This has been acknowledged to our hosts and will be dealt with between the clubs.
