First Team vs. Bedworth United (1 : 1)

Saturday, 21 April, 2018 - 15:00
Evo-Stik League First Division South

Sheffield FC earned their second home draw of the week against play-off bound opposition, writes Stuart James, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Bedworth United.

Opening the scoring was Waide Fairhurst in the 47th minute, bagging his 6th goal in 11 appearances, with Kyle Cartwright netting the equaliser in the 73rd minute.

To say the first half was uneventful would be an understatement, with the best chance on either side landing at the feet of Alex Troke, with the winger sending his effort wide , high and out of the ground.

Things sprang to life four minutes before half time, as Luke Keen was shown a second yellow card after a series of crude tackles, leaving the visitors down to ten men.

Sheffield came out of the blocks on fire in the second half, and two minutes after the restart they had the lead, following a good move from Ben Turner and Joel Purkiss setting up FAIRHURST to finish neatly to make it 1-0.

Club could have built on the lead as Alex Brown went close, as did Joel Purkiss from a Jamie Yates cross, whilst Waide Fairhurst turned and pulled a shot just over the bar.

As time wore on Bedworth started to come into the game, and sent a warning message to the hosts, after Jamie McAteer headed over.

The equaliser came following a Brehon corner, CARTWRIGHT was able to lose his marker, heading home from close range.

Bedworth pressed to secure the goal that would wrap up their play-off spot, however the sturdy Club defence did more than enough to hold off any threat.

Club have now taken 15 points in the ten games since caretaker manager Chris Dolby took charge, lifting the World’s First from being one of the relegation favourites, to a mid-table safety that could have only have been a distant hope back in March.

With two games to go, Sheffield now have a realistic chance to reach their highest position in five seasons, after two 15th place finishes, a 16th and a 17th, since the 9th place finish back in 2013.
